1: EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK
------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the April 2009 newsletter for SelfPublishedAuthors.com. For those of you who are new to the website and newsletter, I hope you will enjoy this issue. Thank you for visiting the website and subscribing to the list. To the regulars out there, I'm very glad to see you back for another issue.
I am seeing many new websites lately that are starting services to help self-published authors list and sell their books. I would like to remind all readers of this newsletter that our own website here at http://www.SelfPublishedAuthors.com/ offers a similar service for FREE. You provide all details including a link to your website, Amazon.com, or wherever a reader can go to purchase your book. No purchases happen here, and no fees are required. It's simply a categorized list of books and their authors with a way for readers to provide ratings and comments. One more way to get the word out for your book, but one where you know the reader is looking for a self-published author because they came here looking for it.
If you have questions, comments, suggestions, or if you'd like to contribute, be interviewed, add an event or have a request, please reply to this email, or drop a line to me at: editor@selfpublishedauthors.com
Thanks for reading and enjoy the issue!

2: NEWSLETTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
------------------------------------------------------------
The newsletter for SelfPublishedAuthors.com is here to provide a resource for all authors. Obviously, I want to help you succeed in your writing, self-publishing efforts, and self-promotion. I have received a few requests from fellow authors asking what they can do to promote their books in the newsletter.
I am always happy to help promote an author and their works in the newsletter. That's what we're here for. That being said, the best I can do is one of the following.
If you are interested in writing an article about your experiences as a self-published author, I would be more than happy to consider it for publication. If I publish the article, I will give you space for a signature box that you could use to promote yourself and your book.
If you would like me to review your book, or interview you for the newsletter, I would ask that you please query me first before sending an ARC copy of your book, eBook format preferred, or even better, an audio version. The last thing I want to do is build up a slush pile for reviews. If you have a press release or other details about yourself and your book, do feel free to forward them to me and I will happily publish them in our Author's Showcase. These aren't reviews, rather they are spotlights, and you can send me your info anytime if you wish to be included. I will share one book and author per issue.
If you have a book signing coming up, we do try to list those when they are timely. Remember our newsletter is published in February, April, June, August, October, and December. If you host a class or workshop, or have a website that promotes a writer's resource, please let us know about it. All links about such events are provided free of charge. Your name, location, dates, and contact info. will be presented.
Currently there are places for you to list your books, websites, and even join our banner ad exchange. You can also feel free to post in our forums and tell us about yourself and your books.

3: FEATURE ARTICLE by Judy Cullins
Dare to Write Your Profitable Book Now!
Don't Believe the Myths
------------------------------------------------------------
You want to make a difference in people's lives; you are researching a topic and becoming an expert. You want to give your audience answers for their questions on your topic. You want to attract new clients, brand yourself or business or be know as the "go to" person for useful information in your field.
You resist! You have doubts. It takes too long. You are too busy. These are reasons, but they aren't real; they are myths. You can write a profitable book--even a lot of books--fast!
Replace These Six Myths With Options
1. Takes too much time.
When you focus on one topic at a time, you can write chapters fast. When you keep your book length under 120 pages, you can write it in less than a month. That's why you need to do some market-driven pre-planning before you write your book.
Know your audience before you write rather than look for one after it's done. Fulfill your book audience needs. Avoid the general or broad audience. Slant your book toward one primary audience.
2. Takes talent and writing ability.
Actually, the less writing know how you have, the better. Natural and organic writing is best. In your own voice answer your audience's concerns and problems.
If you can talk you can write. Readers want books written by a wise and savvy friend who will guide them gracefully to solutions for their challenges. They want passion and natural writing more than perfect syntax. In my early beginnings I felt I was only a trainer, a teacher, a coach. Not a writer! Like me, see a need and fill it--take seminar handouts and organize them into book chapters, for instance.
3. Takes an agent and traditional publisher.
Traditional publishers don't help the emerging or unknown author much. They turn down 99% of you. If you do get their blessing, they will not spend time and money on your marketing. And, this process takes two years or more. For cash flow and profits, go direct to your audience, get a web site, and market your book by writing short articles that relate and submitting them to top ezine directories and blogs. Build profits step by step. Start with an eBook, testing it on your blog, your ezine. You have no costs really with eBooks, except a great 4-color cover. One advantage? You can correct mistakes before you write your print book and market that. And please print only the number you can sell at back of the room events in 3 months.
Why have a big inventory with big mistakes? A waste of money for sure.
4. Takes creativity.
Like me, maybe you write how-to books. Self-publishing pro Dan Poynter told me over 14 years ago that information can be repackaged for any particular target audience. It doesn't take creativity, it just takes some editing, rewriting, adding a few new ideas and resources, and putting it together in an organized, short and simple format to please the consumer who wants easy to read information.
5. You don't know it all.
Many emerging authors do it alone. That's not a good idea. Save time and money mistakes; read books by the pros, Dan Poynter at www.parapublishing.com or John Kremer at www.bookmarket.com or myself at www.bookcoaching.com
Follow their shortcuts, how to steps, that make you a great writer to earn your place among great authors.
6. The book may not sell well.
Know that if you have a book that shares new, unique and useful information, it has enough significance to sell well.
Write an audience profile before you write your book, so your book has an angle, and will stand out from the crowd. In my book, use the hot-selling point of the "Dear Reader," that will become your sparkling introduction.
Ray Bradbury, wrote "Fahrenheit 451" in just nine and a half days. He advises us to write short articles or stories. They can become a longer book. He says if you write a page a day, you'll produce two to ten books a year.
Think of your benefits in writing a book! Your book brings you fame and fortune. People look to you for your expertise. Being an author has status too, often like a movie star's. Even if you don't become famous, you'll love the monthly profits you make from book sales. Even if you don't like to market you can do it online easily in your home based office with short informational pieces like this one. (I bet this one is on hubpages or ezinearticles.com.)
Ask if your doubts are really true. Don't stop yourself from a great adventure that will benefit you and the world.

5: PROMOTION ARTICLE by Patricia Fry
Book Promotion Activities: How Many Should You Do?
------------------------------------------------------------
Have you ever stopped to count the different methods you use for promoting your book? What number do you think is adequate? A dozen? Twenty-five? One hundred?
If you are selling thousands of copies each month through just one promotional activity which you repeat over and over and over again, and you are happy with that result, then, for you, one may be enough. And if you are pursuing dozens of promotional ideas and selling only a book here and there; now and then, perhaps, it isn't the number of activities you're engaged in that is important. Maybe this is the wrong sort of promotion for your particular book or you aren't going about the activity in a way that will compliment your book sales.
Every year, I meet authors at both ends and all throughout the middle of this spectrum. The thing is, we each have comfort levels when it comes to book promotion. Some of us love to get out and talk to people -- give presentations, set up booths at public events, do radio interviews, network in large groups and even sell our books door-to-door at households and businesses, for example. Others prefer staying in the background while spreading the word about their books via press releases, articles and through online forums. And then there are the creative types who run contests in order to get their books noticed, start complex projects to bring attention to their books, create games and puzzles for potential customers and/or build elaborate, interactive websites for promoting their books.
Do you see yourself somewhere among these authors? Where do you fit in when it comes to promoting your book? And what are the results? Are you selling enough books to suit you? Would you like to be selling more? And here's the hard question, what are you willing to do in order to increase your book sales? Hopefully, you are aware that if you are not selling the number of books you dream of, it is not the fault of your "self-publishing" company, your traditional royalty publisher, the guy you hired to do the cover design, the bookstore manager in town, the magazine editor who won't review your book, the website owner who won't post your book or your cat, who strategically placed an ooey gooey furball on a book you left out on the coffee table overnight.
Then who can you blame? Don't blame anyone -- just get out there and start putting forth more effort in the right direction. Here are a few low and no cost ideas for you to consider. I suggest that you choose those that would put your book before your target audience. This may seem elementary, but it is something we need to consider. We are inclined to stay within our comfort zones for the sake of -- well, our comfort. So it's easy to say, for example, "I'll email all of my friends and pitch my book on how to prepare to earn a degree in psychology," when your audience is actually people you don't know -- people who are considering a career in psychology. If you're not marketing to your audience, you might as well not market at all. Here are some ideas to help you jumpstart your book sales:
* Set up your own blog site related to the topic or genre of your book and post often.
* Ask to be interviewed or to be a guest blogger at popular blog sites related to your topic. Locate blogs on your topic by signing up for Google Alerts. You will receive daily announcements about blog posts on the topic of your book.
* Do home parties. Either give demonstrations related to your book topic or speak about your nonfiction topic. Here are a couple of creative ideas: Provide costumes and props and engage guests in acting out a scene from your novel. Create a lovely, peaceful, relaxing atmosphere using soft music and candles and then read passages from your book or poetry. You could even combine this activity with a spa treatment for guests.
* If your book is nonfiction, build a website full of resources related to the theme of your book to attract your target audience.
* We're entering book festival season -- find some close to your home or where you will be vacationing this year, and sign up for booth space. Locate book festivals and book fairs at: http://www.loc.gov/loc/cfbook/bookfair.html or http://dir.yahoo.com/Arts/Humanities/Literature/Events/Festivals/. Or do a Google search for book festivals in your area. Type in keywords, "book festival" or "book fair" and your city name.
* When was the last time your book was publicly reviewed? Are you aware that many magazine and newsletter editors -- even some in your topic/genre -- publish book reviews? While some of them publish reviews sent in by outside reviewers, others do the book review themselves. According to the Magazine Publishers of America, there are around 20,000 consumer and trade magazines being published in the US and Canada as we speak. Over 400 of them relate to health and fitness, 15 on oceanography, 73 featuring photography, 13 about cats, over 150 on advertising and marketing and166 related to and for children, for example. Add to this, the fact that there are nearly 10,000 newsletters being published on every topic and you can quickly see the possibilities of having your book reviewed over and over and over again.
Promoting a book is probably one of the hardest things you will ever attempt. So take it seriously and make it fun.

7: BOOK REVIEW by MaryAnn Shank
GET YOUR WRITING FIGHTING FIT - A Review
------------------------------------------------------------
Systemize! Strip it down! Eliminate! Accentuate!
It sounds like a college cheer. Rah! Rah! Rah-Rah-Rah!
Actually, it's a lot more than a college cheer. It is the way professional editors polish writing. Even Asimov and Hemmingway had editors. In fact, without their editors, they wouldn't be the acclaimed writers that they are.
I wouldn't presume to be a polished writer myself, but I know that I see so much lousy writing on the web that I wish everyone had Audrey Own at their elbow, forcing them to write better.
Although we can't all capture Audrey's time, we can review the editing techniques that she so generously shares with us in GET YOUR WRITING FIGHTING FIT. In eleven snappy chapters she takes us from sloppy to sublime. It's part of her editing philosophy to keep it snappy: "Lean, mean writing keeps your readers keen" (p.6).
First Audrey examines the elements that editors look for when they do their editing task. Things like words, sentences, paragraphs and chapters - all the good, the bad and the truly ugly.
Then she shares her seven step Quick Assessment Process. Here is how you and I can create writing that flows with a zing. We are to take only two pages of our project, and we set a timer to limit us. Then, with a swirl of circles and X's, looking for very specific items, our writing emerges with strength and vitality. And it's all done in a matter of a few minutes.
For instance, one of her steps to writing success is to read just the first sentence of each paragraph. Reading just that much, does the writing convey the general idea? It should. The first sentence is that important. If it does not, that is an area of your writing that needs attention.
One of Audrey's editing techniques is to give variety to sentence and paragraph length and structure. Mix it up, she calls it.
Like here.
This is a great editing system. It is clear, direct, fast, and very doable for most writers.
Keep in mind that "editing" is not "writing". "Editing" is what enhances our "writing". Before editing can do you a blimey bit of good, you need to start with solid writing. Your idea needs to be there, composed in reasonable sentences and paragraphs.
Then put your own writing through Audrey's great seven step editing process and Bingo! You've got a great piece of prose.
Pick up your copy of GET YOUR WRITING FIGHTING FIT at http://www.writershelper.com/gywffsales.html . It's worth every penny of the $29.00 cost. And while you are at Audrey's website, take a look around. You'll discover slews of more great ideas too.

10: COMMENTARY by Patricia Fry
Have You Ever Bought a Self-Published Book?
------------------------------------------------------------
Seriously, this question was posed to a friend of mine who contemplated hiring a self-publishing company for his first book. The author who asked him this was trying to make the point that no one buys self-published books. While this author has had a few books produced -- all of them are by traditional royalty publishers.
But wow, what a question: "Have you ever bought a self-published book?" I can't imagine very many people responding in the negative. Of course, we've all bought self-published books.
First, let's identify a self-published book. It's a book that was produced independent of a traditional royalty publisher. It's a book published by an individual who becomes an independent publisher or through one of the many fee-based POD "self-publishing" companies. If you've ever bought a book at a book or harvest festival, a flea market or holiday boutique, for example, it was probably self-published. If you've purchased books in the back of the room after a conference, speech or other presentation, chances are, it was self-published. Do you buy books online? It may have been self-published.
When you bought the book, did you check to see who published it? Probably not. Did you care whether or not it was self-published? If you're fascinated by astrology and you found a neat little pocket guide to astrology, you're probably going to buy it no matter who published it. If you discover a quaint little book of poems about children, you may purchase it for your niece who's expecting her first child whether it was produced by Simon and Schuster or the Mom and Pop Publishing Company of Kansas. If someone recommends a fantastic novel, you're going to order it no matter where it came from.
I probably buy more self-published books than traditionally published books. And I do so consciously. I like to support my fellow independent publishers and those who teamed with fee-based POD "self-publishing" companies to produce the book of their dreams.
I wonder if the author who asked that controversial question knows that Mark Twain self-published his work. And is he aware that James Redfield (Celestine Prophecy) and Richard Paul Evans (The Christmas Box), Beatrix Potter, Zane Grey, Edgar Allen Poe and Patricia Fry are/were all self-published authors? Most of us have had publishers pick up some of our works after we demonstrated their worth in the marketplace.
It's too bad that the self-publishing stigma lives on in the minds of some people. How can we change that? Here's how:
* Produce the very best books that you can. This means, study the publishing industry so you know what it will bear and how you can participate in raising the bar.
* Write a book proposal so that you ultimately produce a quality book that is wanted/needed by a large segment of the population.
* Commit to promoting your book so it receives the recognition it deserves.
* Support independent publishers who are producing quality products. Join with others to convince booksellers and major reviewers that they should consider books by merit rather than company name.
